CBD Lip Balm: Everything You Need To Know

What is lip balm?

The purpose of lip balm is to provide a protective layer on the lips surface to seal moisture and preserve them from external exposure.

Climatic conditions such as cold temperatures, dry air, and wind draw moisture away from the body. The early signs of dehydrations are dry lips and skin.

Why use CBD lip balm?

Topical CBD products are increasingly popular. Their various therapeutic effects on the skin are at the key of their success. Studies suggest that CBD has:

  • Sebostatic effects, meaning it can reduce sebum production and control acne around the lips.

More research is needed to further understand the benefits of CBD.

While many lip balms contain soothing ingredients, CBD lip balm actually heals the lips. So far it is safe to say that if your lips are dry and irritated, painful, or inflamed CBD lip balm is an attractive option to provide relief.

How does CBD lip balm work?

The CBD contained in the lip balm is absorbed and acts on the lip skin’s endocannabinoid system, which is how the therapeutic effects are experienced.

The effect is local.

CBD does not have psychotropic effects. If you worry about a possible drug test, you won’t fail it by using topical CBD products.

Choosing a CBD lip balm

The FDA does not regulate CBD products as well as they regulate drugs or dietary supplements. The market is crowded with products from companies that claim to have the best option. Companies sometimes mislabel or misrepresent their products. When you’re doing your research, we suggest you pay attention to the following criterias:

Quality

Transparent companies share the source of the cannabis they use. They should provide the certificate of analysis. The COA specifies the cannabinoid profile and confirms that the product is free of pesticides, heavy metals, and mold. Having its cannabis tested by a third-party is a must-have for reliable, law-abiding CBD manufacturers.

Today’s consumers don’t pay much attention to product content, but we encourage you to make the effort. Make sure the COA is recent (within the past 12 months) and batch specific. You can find it on the website or in the product description. Some companies may provide it on the packaging. In the case it is not publicly shared you can request it via email. If the company is reticent to provide the COA, avoid buying their product. You will find better.

Ideally you should buy products made with organic hemp grown locally. Hemp grown in the United States is subject to agricultural regulations. To be marketed, the plant must contain less than 0.3% of THC.

Potency

The ideal level of potency is a personal preference. Most lip balms contain 15 to 25mg of CBD per tube, but you can find lip balms with 50mg and more.

Price point

The price of CBD lip balms range from $3 to $30. Check various lip balm’s composition and potency to evaluate an appropriate price to value ratio.

Other ingredients

CBD lip balms are not entirely made from CBD. Check the other ingredients and favor the ones made with natural and organic ingredients. Avoid lip balms that contain menthol, camphor, phenol or any sort of alcohol. Although you may feel an immediate cooling sensation, these ingredients will irritate your lips and can remove the outer layer of skin leaving your lips unprotected. You should also avoid lip balms with parabens.

CBD type

The type of CBD will determine what cannabinoids are in a product. Cannabinoids are compounds found in cannabis. There are at least 144 different cannabinoids. The two major compounds that can be found are phytocannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabidiol (CBD).

  • Full-spectrum CBD: contains all cannabinoids, including CBD and THC. This is said to create an entourage effect. Federally legal products contain less than 0.3 percent THC.

Entourage effect: This is the theory that all the compounds in cannabis work together to produce a better effect than when taken alone.

  • Broad-spectrum CBD: contains a mix of cannabinoids, usually without THC

  • CBD isolate: pure isolated CBD, without any other other cannabinoids

Your optimal choice depends on your preferences and the compounds you’d like to use.

Claims

As mentioned earlier, the FDA does not regulate CBD like other related drugs, so be careful of misleading claims. CBD should be used as an additional treatment rather than a solution to cure a condition.

How to use CBD lip balm?

Like any addition to your skincare routine, it is recommended to slowly introduce the lip balm into your routine.

Apply a layer on your lips and check for any sign of irritation or discomfort. If you do not develop a reaction, you can safely continue using the lip balm.

Just like a regular lip balm, a CBD lip balm can be applied multiple times a day.
